Emerald Ash Borer

ForestryEmeraldAshBorerAsh Trees with Emerald Ash Borer infestation have now been found in the city. We have been proactively treating and removing trees as part of our Des Moines Emerald Ash Borer Management Program. We are replacing removed trees with a variety of different tree species to reduce the likelihood of a future disease impacting multiple trees at one time. We are also encouraging residents with ash trees located on their property to be proactive about treating or removing these trees. Once infected, Emerald Ash Borer usually kills an ash tree within two to four years.

What To Look For
Known for its metallic green wing color, EAB is hard to see with the untrained eye. Even more difficult to detect are the larvae that burrow into the bark and feed on tissue, eventually starving and killing the trees. Signs of infestation include thinning and yellowing leaves, D-shaped holes in the bark, and canopy and bark loss.
